NGC1647 Magnitude Charts for Large Binoculars and Small Scopes

K. Fisher fisherka@csolutions.net 3/2004

Introduction and Table of Contents

The following NGC1647 charts and materials that were developed for self-education purposes. Other beginning amateurs may find them useful for developing their skills at estimating star magnitudes using large binoculars and small telescopes. This project also was intended as a personal vehicle to explore how to prepare magnitude charts in the modern era predominated by internet disseminated low-variance photoelectric and photographic photometry catalogues.

Table of Contents

  • The wide-field Naked-Eye Limiting Magnitude (NELM) chart - v4.8 to 7.0 - 54 stars - FOV 45 x 30 degrees
  • The NGC1647 magnitude chart - v9.0 to 13.0 - 69 stars - FOV 1 degree
  • Directory listing for downloading project supporting materials
  • List of hobby amateur activities using the NELM area-wide chart and the NGC1647 charts
  • Project homepage (this document)

Quick Links to Charts and Supporting Tables

  • NGC1647 area finder chart, including Aldebaran and nearby Cephid variable SZ Tauri
  • Orion-Taurus area-wide v5.0-7.0 NELM estimating chart
  • NGC1647 v9.0-13.0 Direct view magnitude chart and tables - for use with binoculars
  • NGC1647 v9.0-13.0 Even view magnitude chart and tables - for use with Newtonian reflectors
  • NGC1647 v9.0-13.0 Odd view magnitude chart and tables - for use with SCTs
  • NGC 1647 v9.0-13.0 Star numbering system chart and tables - Direct view - star numbers, not magnitudes plotted
  • NGC1647 v9.0-13.0 Star numbering system chart and tables - Odd reflection view - star numbers, not magnitudes plotted
  • This is an amateur observer effort. All criticisms and correction of any errors are solicited and welcomed.
